This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a test for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your other half and say, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
