Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment that year
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
