In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Political Partnership
According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
