New research indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
