EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
