At least thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic initiatives.
